A Pakistani wedding is not one event — it's a wardrobe of moods. Mehndi is playful, Maioon is intimate, Nikkah is spiritual, Barat is theatrical, and Walima is refined. Your makeup should shift with each, not just repeat itself in slightly different lipstick. After years of doing brides across Lahore — many of them juggling five functions in seven days — I've learned that the difference between a good bridal album and a breathtaking one is knowing exactly how much to dial up (or down) for each function. Here's the honest breakdown, function by function.
Mehndi: Dewy, Warm and Unapologetically Colourful
Mehndi is the loosest brief of the week. You're dancing, you're laughing, you're likely outdoors under warm string lights. The makeup should look alive, not painted.
Skin finish: Satin to dewy. Heavy matte foundation photographs flat under yellow lighting and ages you on camera. A lightweight, luminous base with targeted concealing works better.
Palette: Marigold, saffron, terracotta, coral, mustard, deep orange. This is the one function where warm-on-warm actually sings. Green eyeshadow paired with an orange or fuchsia dupatta is a classic that never misses.
Focus features:
- Softly smoked eyes with a pop of colour on the lower lash line
- Flushed, rounded cheeks (think fresh, not chiselled)

Longevity tip: Mehndi is sweaty work. Ask your artist for a waterproof base and carry blotting sheets — not powder, which cakes as the night goes on.
Maioon (Mayun): Soft, Radiant and Almost No-Makeup
Maioon is traditionally a home function where the bride wears yellow, stays off her feet, and is doused in ubtan. The makeup here should look like skin that's been loved, not skin that's been contoured.
Skin finish: Sheer tint or skin tint, plus a beautiful highlight on the high points. If your skin has been prepped properly with a hydrating facial a week before, you'll barely need coverage.
Palette: Peach, soft rose, champagne, warm nudes. Avoid anything too pigmented — Maioon photos are usually candid and close-up.
Focus features:
- Groomed, fluffy brows
- A wash of peach or soft gold on the lids
- Cream blush pressed high on the cheekbones
- Tinted balm on the lips
Many brides book a Party Makeup rather than full bridal for Maioon — it suits the mood better and saves your face (and budget) for the bigger nights.
Nikkah: Elegant, Timeless and Photograph-First
Nikkah is sacred, quiet, and produces the photos your children will one day frame. This is not the function for trends. This is the function for classic.
Skin finish: Luminous but structured. You want definition without harshness — soft contour, buffed edges, no visible cut crease.
Palette: Rose gold, mauve, dusty pink, soft bronze, muted plum. These tones read beautifully against white, ivory, powder blue and pastel pink Nikkah outfits.
Focus features:
- A soft halo eye with shimmer concentrated on the centre of the lid
- Fluttery, natural-looking lashes — not the heavy criss-cross style
- A rosy nude lip with a slightly darker liner for definition
- Subtle inner-corner highlight (the Nikkah namah signing shot lives or dies by this)

Barat: The Statement, The Drama, The Full Regalia
Barat is the look. Red or maroon lehenga, heaviest jewellery, longest ghoonghat. Your makeup has to hold its own against embroidery that took six months to make.
Skin finish: Full coverage but never mask-like. A proper base building technique — thin layers, set only where needed — keeps you looking radiant in a hall full of harsh photography lights.
Palette: Bronze, copper, burgundy, deep gold, smoky brown with red undertones. Traditional smokey eyes work here because the lehenga can carry it.
Focus features:
- Sculpted, defined eyes — cut crease, halo, or classic smoke
- Full lashes (double stacked is fair game on Barat)
- Sharp but softened contour that reads on camera from a distance
- A statement lip in deep rose, wine, or brick red

Practical note: Barat days are long — usually 10 to 14 hours from tayari to vidaai. Talk to your artist about a mid-day touch-up, and consider getting your hair styling and extensions locked in before base makeup begins so nothing shifts your foundation later.
Walima: Refined, Grown-Up and Softly Glamorous
Walima is your first function as a married woman, and the makeup should reflect that shift — more polished, less theatrical, distinctly elevated.
Palette: Champagne, taupe, soft bronze, mauve, dusty pink, muted rose gold. Walima outfits are usually pastel — mint, powder blue, ivory, blush, lilac — so the makeup should complement, not compete.
Focus features:
- A soft smoked eye in taupe or bronze
- Winged liner (thinner and more elegant than Barat)
- Glowing, sculpted skin
- A pinky-nude or mauve lip with soft gloss

Making the Five Looks Feel Like One Story
The brides whose weddings look the most curated aren't wearing the most makeup — they're wearing the most intentional makeup. A few principles that help:
- Pick a signature. Maybe it's a defined lip, a specific brow shape, or a signature inner-corner shimmer. Repeat it across all five looks.
- Vary intensity, not identity. Your face shouldn't look like five different women.
- Prep your skin for weeks, not days. Regular cleansing facials starting six to eight weeks before the wedding do more than any foundation ever will.
