Keratin vs Rebonding vs Extenso: Lahore Smoothing Guide

Walk into any salon in DHA and ask about "smoothing" and you'll be offered three very different treatments in the same breath: keratin, rebonding, and Extenso. They all promise sleeker hair — but they work in completely different ways, damage your strands to different degrees, and last for very different amounts of time. Choosing wrong is expensive and, honestly, hard to reverse. Here's how we actually think about it at the salon when a client sits in the chair and says, "I just want my hair to behave."

What Each Treatment Actually Does

Before you commit to anything, it helps to understand what's happening on a structural level. This is where most confusion starts.

Keratin Treatment

A keratin treatment coats the hair with a protein-rich solution (usually keratin plus a smoothing agent) that's then sealed in with high heat from a flat iron. It doesn't permanently alter the internal bonds of your hair — it deposits protein on and slightly inside the cuticle, smoothing frizz and cutting drying time dramatically.

• Result: Softer, shinier, less frizzy hair that still moves and has some natural wave.
• Reversibility: Washes out gradually over 3–5 months.
• Damage level: Low to moderate, depending on the formula.

Hair Rebonding

Rebonding is chemical. A strong relaxer breaks the disulfide bonds inside your hair, the hair is flat-ironed dead-straight, and a neutraliser reforms the bonds in the new straight shape. It's permanent — the treated hair will not curl again. Ever.

• Result: Poker-straight, flat, glass-like hair.
• Reversibility: None. You grow it out.
• Damage level: High. This is the harshest of the three.

Extenso (L'Oréal)

Extenso is L'Oréal's branded smoothing system. It uses the same chemistry family as rebonding but with a gentler, cream-based formula and built-in conditioning agents. The goal is smooth and straight — but a softer straight than rebonding, with more movement.

• Result: Straight but not board-flat; hair still swings naturally.
• Reversibility: Permanent on treated hair.
• Damage level: Moderate — gentler than classic rebonding, harsher than keratin.

Which One Suits Your Hair Type?

This is where most clients go wrong. They pick based on price or on what a friend got, not on their actual hair.

• Fine, wavy, frizzy hair: Keratin. Rebonding will make fine hair look limp and lifeless.
• Medium-thick hair with strong frizz and some wave: Extenso is usually the sweet spot.
• Very thick, coarse, curly hair that you want dead-straight: Rebonding is the only thing that will truly hold.
• Coloured or highlighted hair: Start with keratin. Chemical smoothing on top of bleach is a fast track to breakage.
• Previously chemically treated hair: Book a consultation first. Layering chemistries is where disasters happen.

Longevity, Cost & Maintenance in Lahore

Lahore's climate matters here more than people realise. Our humidity in monsoon months is brutal on smoothing treatments — especially the gentler ones.

How Long Each Lasts

1. Keratin: 3–5 months on average. Shorter if you swim, wash daily, or use sulphate shampoo.
2. Extenso: Permanent on treated hair, but the smoothed finish on new growth needs a touch-up every 6–8 months.
3. Rebonding: Permanent. Touch-ups at the roots every 6–9 months as hair grows out.

Realistic Cost Bands

Prices in DHA salons vary widely by hair length and product line. Broadly:

• Keratin sits in the mid range.
• Extenso is usually the most expensive per session because of the branded product cost.
• Rebonding can be cheaper than Extenso but requires more aftercare product spend.

Aftercare That Actually Matters

• Use a sulphate-free, sodium-chloride-free shampoo. Non-negotiable.
• Wait 72 hours before washing or tying your hair after keratin or Extenso.
• No tight hair ties, clips or tucking behind the ear for the first 3 days on chemical treatments — you'll set a permanent bend.
• Weekly deep conditioning masks. Chemical smoothing strips moisture; you have to put it back in.
• Heat protectant every single time you style.

The Damage Question — Being Honest

All three treatments damage your hair to some degree. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling, not styling.

Keratin is the safest because it's largely a surface treatment. Extenso and rebonding both break internal bonds — that's how they work. The difference is in formulation quality, the skill of the stylist applying it, and how well you look after your hair afterwards. A badly done keratin can fry your ends; a beautifully done Extenso can leave your hair in genuinely good shape for months.

The two biggest damage triggers we see in Lahore:

1. Combining chemical smoothing with bleach or heavy highlights within a few months of each other.
2. Skipping the aftercare shampoo and using regular drugstore products that undo the treatment and dry the hair out.

If your hair is already fragile — post-bridal styling, post-pregnancy shedding, or heavily coloured — consider a restorative approach first: bond-repair treatments, deep conditioning, a good trim.
