Threading vs Waxing for Face: Pros & Cons by Skin Type

A senior stylist's breakdown of threading versus waxing for facial hair, with honest pros, cons and recommendations tailored to your skin type.

Ask any woman in Lahore who has been getting her face done for years and she will have a strong opinion: some swear by threading and won't let a strip of wax near their skin, others find threading unbearable and prefer wax every three weeks. Both are excellent — but they behave very differently depending on your skin type, your hair pattern and the season. Below is the honest, senior-stylist breakdown we give clients at the salon before we ever pick up a thread or spatula.

How Threading and Waxing Actually Work

Threading uses a twisted cotton thread that traps hair and lifts it out of the follicle. It only removes hair — it does not touch the top layer of skin. That precision is why it stays the gold standard for eyebrows.

Waxing (whether traditional, organic sugar or fruit wax) coats the hair and a thin layer of dead skin, then rips both away in one motion. So you get hair removal plus mild exfoliation in a single step. That extra exfoliation is either a feature or a problem, depending on the skin it's happening to.

Understanding this one difference — thread touches hair only, wax touches skin too — solves most of the confusion.

Pros and Cons at a Glance

Where threading wins

  • Precision. Nothing beats thread for shaping brows, cleaning up between them or handling the fine sideburn area.
  • No chemicals or heat touching the skin, so reactions are rare.
  • Safe on active breakouts — you can thread around a pimple without disturbing it.
  • Works on very short hair that wax cannot grip yet.
  • Post-procedure downtime is minimal: some redness for an hour, then nothing.

Where waxing wins

  • Faster for larger areas like full face, cheeks and jawline.
  • Softer regrowth. Because the hair is pulled with the root, new growth comes in finer and blunter-feeling.
  • Smoother finish, since the top layer of dead skin comes off too — makeup sits noticeably better afterwards.
  • Longer gaps between appointments for most women (3–4 weeks vs 2–3 weeks for threading).

Where each one loses

Threading can feel sharper in the moment, especially on the upper lip. It also doesn't exfoliate, so if you have dull, congested skin, you won't get that post-treatment glow.

Waxing can lift skin if you're using retinol, doing chemical peels or on Accutane. It can trigger post-inflammatory pigmentation on deeper South Asian skin tones if done too aggressively or too often. And on very fine vellus (peach fuzz) hair, some clients notice regrowth feels coarser — a debated point, but worth flagging.

By Skin Type: What We'd Actually Recommend

Sensitive or reactive skin

Go with threading, especially with a well-trained hand. If you want your full face done and threading feels too tedious, a fruit-wax threading combination is a gentler middle ground — the fruit wax formulation is lower in resin and less likely to leave skin flushed for hours.

Avoid traditional hot wax on sensitive skin altogether. If you insist on wax, ask specifically for organic sugar, applied at body temperature.

Oily and acne-prone skin

This is where it gets nuanced. If you have active, inflamed acne, thread only — wax can spread bacteria and rupture pustules. If your skin is oily but currently clear, a monthly organic sugar wax can genuinely help: the exfoliation lifts the dead skin that clogs pores along the jawline and chin.

Skip waxing entirely in the 7 days after any strong exfoliating facial.

Dry and mature skin

Waxing usually wins here. The gentle exfoliation revives dull skin, and the smoother surface makes fine lines look softer. Fruit wax is our default for this group because it's less dehydrating than traditional wax. Follow with a rich moisturiser that night and SPF the next morning.

Threading is still perfect for brows on mature skin — it doesn't tug at the delicate lid area the way wax can.

Pigmentation-prone skin (most South Asian skin)

If you scar easily or notice dark marks lingering after breakouts, be careful with wax on the upper lip and chin — these are the two areas most likely to develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Thread the upper lip and chin, wax the cheeks and jaw if you want the exfoliation. This split approach is what we recommend to a lot of DHA clients dealing with melasma.

Combination skin

Honestly, you can do either. Many of our regulars alternate: classic threading for brows every 2 weeks, and a facial wax once a month before an event.

Lahore-Specific Things to Consider

Lahore's climate genuinely changes what you should book. In peak summer, waxed skin sweats into freshly opened pores within hours — you'll get more small bumps than in winter. Try to wax in the evening so skin can calm overnight in AC. In smog season, the exfoliation from waxing can actually help lift particulate buildup, but pair it with a proper deep cleansing session the same week for best results.

Also: humidity affects how wax behaves. A wax that felt perfect in December may feel sticky and less effective in July. A good technician adjusts the formula — don't be shy about mentioning if your last session felt off.

The Aftercare Rules Nobody Tells You

  1. No hot showers, steam or gym for 12 hours after either treatment — pores are open.
  2. Skip actives that night — retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums. Plain moisturiser and SPF the next day.
  3. Don't get a facial the same day as waxing. Space them at least 48 hours apart, or book a combined appointment where the therapist plans the order.
  4. Exfoliate lightly from day 3 to prevent ingrowns, especially on the chin.
  5. Don't touch your face for a few hours — freshly threaded or waxed skin picks up bacteria from fingers surprisingly fast.

Book whichever treatment fits your skin this month, not what worked five years ago. Skin changes with pregnancy, medication, seasons and stress — and the right choice between thread and wax often changes with it.

Good to know

quick questions —

Answered.

Which lasts longer on the face — threading or waxing?
Waxing typically lasts 3–4 weeks because it pulls hair with the root more consistently, while threading lasts about 2–3 weeks. Regrowth after waxing also feels softer, whereas threaded regrowth comes back with the original texture.
Can I wax my face if I use retinol or vitamin C?
Stop retinol at least 5–7 days before facial waxing and vitamin C for 2 days. These actives thin the top skin layer, so waxing over them can lift skin and cause raw patches or hyperpigmentation. Threading is completely safe with active skincare.
Does facial waxing cause dark spots on Pakistani skin?
It can, particularly on the upper lip and chin, if done too frequently or too hot. Choose gentler formulations like organic sugar or fruit wax, avoid waxing over irritated skin, and use SPF daily. For pigmentation-prone areas, threading is the safer long-term choice.
Is threading painful the first time?
It stings briefly, especially on the upper lip, but most first-timers describe it as sharp rather than lasting. The sensation fades within seconds. A skilled technician's speed matters more than anything — a rushed or hesitant hand is what makes threading feel worse than it should.
